James Pietrangelo (Jim) is a partner at SmithValeriote Law Firm LLP specializing in family law and civil litigation. He has extensive trial experience before all court levels in the Province of Ontario, including the Ontario Court of Appeal. Jim is certified as a Collaborative Family Law Lawyer and has broad experience with step-parent adoptions. Jim’s client’s appreciate his down to earth and practical advice that is focussed on resolution.
Jim’s civil litigation practice includes contractual disputes, personal injury, estate litigation and assisting creditors collect unpaid debts.
Jim acts for the Ministry of the Attorney General with respect to Canada Student Loan claims.
Jim holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a Minor in Political Science from the University of Waterloo and an LL.B. from the University of Ottawa. He was called to the bar in Ontario in 2002 and has been with SmithValeriote Law Firm LLP since 2001. He has been a partner since 2010.
Jim is active in the community and is on the Board of Directors for the Wellington Law Association, Stonehenge Therapeutic Community and the Groves Hospital Foundation in Fergus, Ontario. He was formerly heavily involved with the Edward Johnson Music Foundation. In the past he has coached CYO Guelph basketball and Guelph house league soccer.
Jim and his wife Danielle have two wonderful children. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling with his family and has especially enjoyed travelling to Italy and New York City. Jim regularly attends rock concerts and is a sports enthusiast with particular interest in formula 1 car racing, mixed martial arts and soccer. Jim is also an avid reader and collector of comic books and graphic novels.
